Calculate your overtime after tax →How overtime pay is calculated
Overtime pay is worked out in two steps. First, multiply your normal hourly rate by your overtime rate to find your overtime hourly rate. Then multiply that by the number of overtime hours you worked. The result is your gross overtime pay before any tax or National Insurance.
Overtime multipliers
The overtime rate is usually shown as a multiplier of your normal pay. 1x means overtime is paid at your normal rate, 1.25x is time and a quarter, 1.5x is time and a half and 2x is double time. Some employers use other rates, which you can enter with the Custom option.
Time and a half and double time
Time and a half pays 1.5 times your normal hourly rate for each extra hour. Double time pays twice your normal rate and is often used for Sundays, bank holidays or unsocial hours. Which rate applies, and when, depends on your contract.
Examples
- £15.00 an hour x 10 hours at time and a half = £225.00
- £20.00 an hour x 5 hours at double time = £200.00
- £18.00 an hour x 8 hours at your normal rate = £144.00
Do UK employers have to pay an overtime premium?
Not generally. UK law does not require employers to pay a higher rate for overtime. Whether you get time and a half, double time or your normal rate depends on your employment contract or workplace agreement. Your average hourly pay across all the hours you work must still be at least the National Minimum Wage.
